Status Report: Click here to review. For high school graduates, the Cherokee Nation awards $2 million worth of higher education scholarships. The awards are up to $1000 a semester and once a student is accepted, they will receive their scholarship for up to eight semesters as long as they maintain academic standing. The scholarships are funded by a special Council appropriation from Cherokee Nation Motor Fuels Tax revenues. Diabetes devastating all ages in Indian communities Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith is a member of the National Tribal Leaders Diabetes committee, which is an advisory group to the Indian Health Service. Smith and other tribal leaders helped push Congress for an additional $70 million in diabetes funding for the IHS this year, and the advisory board has made recommendations to Trujillo on how to distribute the money among tribes.
